PTEROCARPUS SANTALINUS

                                      Red sandalwood

  redsandalwood also called as" yerrachandanam" .The binomial name is "PTEROCARPUS  SANTALINUS"  redsandalwood is a species of pterocarpus native top india, it is only found in southindia in andhrapradesh. with a trunk of 50 - 150 cm in diameter.  it is a fast growing tree, when young reaching  a 5met tall in three years even on degraded soils ,it is not frost tolerant  being killed bytemperature1°c.

The leaves are 3 - 9 cm long and the flowers are produced in short racemes ,the fruit is a pod (dry fruit) 6 -9 cm long containing  one or two seeds .The chinese interpretation for the indian word "CHANDAN" for red andalwood .The area is characterised by hot dry climate with around 100nm of rain in each of the two annual monsoons .The trees are found in the dry hill areas.

The heartwood ,useful part  of plant  is extremely hard ,blood red in colour with occassional. light yellow stacks.The plant can be easily located even from a distance because of its characteristic bark that looks like cobra skin. In case of redsandal cultivation , when we germinate seeds the growth will be a bit little late,in case of using rootstacks the growth wil be faster.

after 15 yrs per tree yields 500 kg heartwood
1 acre  = 435*500 = 217tons,
so 217*30 lakhs = 65.10 crores..
red sandalwood uses : -
  1. It is an age old effective remedy to fight acne, skin rashes, sunburn , blemishes and premature aging
  2. Use sandalwood powder and green tea mask to get rid of wrinkles and sun induced aging
  3. Red sandalwood powde is extenively used in ayurveda
  4. to use digestive problems
  5. to lower blood pressure and hyper tension
It also has  anti - bacterial  and antiseptic properties
